It’s getting dark at the ranch. Tom drains the last of his bottle of water. He’ll be going down soon, once the dark has settled. Once everyone is asleep. John Breen said there were guards posted when he came out. Tom can sneak past them. If not, he’s sure he can subdue them. Then he’ll hotwire one of the jeeps to get Heather and Willie back to town.

Heather is still outside. She finished washing the clothes and hanging them up to dry about an hour ago. She’s just sitting on the grass now, picking at it. She looks dazed. Now that her work is finished, she doesn’t know what to do with herself.

She’s still under guard. It’s a different man now, sitting on the porch of the ranch. He has a shotgun across his lap. He’s picking his nose while he watches her.

There hasn’t been any sign of Bear in a while. He’s been inside the house, along with the tall man and a few others. Rotten Willie has been left outside. He’s been lying on the grass and drinking beer. It doesn’t appear like he has much to do around here. He hasn’t practised his knife work or his shooting. From what Tom saw of him behind the supermarket, he should probably work on both, as well as his hand-to-hand combat.

Tom readies his gear while it’s still light. As he works, he spots movement down below. It’s around Heather. He raises the binoculars.

Bear has emerged from the house. He’s made his way to Heather, and he’s dragging her to her feet. He’s not gentle. He holds her face in his hand and looks into her eyes, checking how cognizant she is. Bear shakes her. He’s rough. Backhands her. At no point does Heather object. She doesn’t fight back. Bear grins and drags her back up to the house. Willie has propped himself up where he lies, and he’s watching. He starts to sit up. A lot of the other men are watching, too. They’re smiling, laughing. Someone whoops, though Tom can’t hear it from up here, just sees the shape their mouth makes.

Bear drags Heather into the house. They don’t return. Tom feels his stomach tighten. He has a bad feeling about what is happening. He puts the rucksack on his back and pulls the strap tight. He’s left the M4 out. He carries it on his shoulder and carefully makes his way down the mountain. He wants to get closer, to be sure of what he thinks is happening.

He moves carefully, being sure not to knock loose any rocks that could tumble down the mountain and alert the people below to his movements. He pauses every few metres and looks through the binoculars and makes sure no one is looking his way. No one is. With darkness coming, a lot of the people are settling down for the night. A couple of them are lighting a fire. Some have gone into their tents. The women of the militia are with the fire-makers.
